Disappointing. Plain and simple.

Yeah, I don't like it.

I know it's been said many times before, but I honestly think it's true- it's been a downward progression since Silent Alarm, IMO.

The best thing about this song is that I can see it being a good song for remixes.

I love it. I thought it was a very catchy tune and really appreciate bloc pushing the boundaries once more. Mercury was a grower but this is classic. I hope it does well and is remixed also. This is the sort song which I think is normally b sided like classics of version2.0 and others so am happy one of these is now next single BP forever keep making the best music around at moment

yeah... maybe, could grow on me...

I dunno, i liked your visits getting shorter, but i assumed that it would be the end. I thought intimacy was great, i love the electronic business that they are introducing, but i would hate a whole album of 'one more chances'. They could leave a song like that on the remix albums?

utter disappointment.
enough said.

I think it's going to be a massive tune but I'm disappointed with it. For me, Bloc Party always did something new and exciting. The Prayer was such unusual tune but it really worked, Flux was an awesome blend of electronic and guitar based music and mercury was so refreshing. This tune feels like they're just recycling some 90s dance track, something that would be better placed on a Calvin Harris record.

I think we're going to see a Kele solo project soon. I just hope it is a tad less commercial.. Bloc Party please :)

It's not a bad song, but to me it sounds very similar to alot of other club type songs. It just seems like Bloc Party are becoming less individual and unique with each release.

It's an average song, not mind blowing but it's still good. I think Kele needs to step away from the old school garage just for a little while.

Honestly, I really don't think bloc was trying to do anything spectacularly unique for this single. They've certainly avoided b-sides on this album, probably because they got so much flak for the AWITC b-sides being way better than AWITC. This sounds just like every other electrocentric song they've done lately so it's probably just an Intimacy b-side. At least it's better than the abomination that was Idea For a Story, right?

I really don't think we'll hear any fresh Bloc Party stylings 'til after their one year break when they make the fourth album. until then, I wouldn't be surprised if they just released the Intimacy b-sides as singles over the course of the next year just to tide over the die-hard blocheads 'til album #4.

"At least it's better than the abomination that was Idea For a Story, right?"

I liked that song. That and 'Mercury' are the best Bloc Paty A-side/B-side combo since 'So Here We Are/The Marshals Are Dead'.

Paul x

can't you see what bloc party are trying to do here? Kele has always said he wanted to create dance songs with a traditional band set up and he's finally accomplished this. This is arguably the first bloc party song which wouldn't sound out of place if played at a Ruby Blue R n' B night.

Its that fekin Jacknife Lee again!

He says in the interview with Zane that he's listening to more 90s stuff so thats the influence right there and perhaps where he wants the 'sound' to go, a bit cluby.

He says 'he's' doin sumit in the studio so poss a solo project?? I think the bands becoming a side project!

"I liked that song. That and 'Mercury' are the best Bloc Paty A-side/B-side combo since 'So Here We Are/The Marshals Are Dead'."

Ok, Mercury has grown on me recently, it fits pretty well with the flow of Intimacy. But Idea For a Story is just a poor song, plain and simple. Plus when I first heard Mercury I totally lost faith in Bloc Party. I have been a fan since pre-Silent Alarm days, and to me that's always what I will want Bloc Party to sound like. I have gotten used to the electro stuff, but when Mercury first came out and I was expecting some edgy guitars and excellent tong-iness it was like a slap in the face. Idea For a Story simply added insult to injury. It's just a poorly written, poorly produced song. It sounds like it could have been made by some bored teenager in a basement with garageband.

So Here We Are is a musical masterpiece, arguably Bloc's best work to date. Mercury/Idea For a Story does not even begin to size up to the grandeur of So Here We Are. Plus, the AWITC b-sides were excellent, I'd have to say the Hunting For Witches/Cavaliers and Roundheads combo has probably been one of their best. Certainly not Mercury/Idea For a Story.

Anyway, I digress... One More Chance does seem like another bit of evidence that Kele is slowly moving away from Russell, Matt, and Gordon. I've felt that way since Flux first came out and songs like Mercury, Your Visits Are Getting Shorter, and this newest one are only confirming my fears. It's good music, but I guess I will just always miss Bloc's early days.

Speaking as someone who loved AWITC and Silent Alarm equally and felt Intimacy was a slight step-down (although they certainly learned how to do a slow song), this does feel pretty bland, highlighting neither spiky guitars or Kele's voice, the two things that made Bloc great for me

what happened bloc????? i got so bored of this song in the first minute. Bloc party is drifting away

Musically I do like it, but lyrically I thought it could have been much better.

Its better than quite a few of their other recent songs, so I'm not terribly disappointed.

I'm probably in the minority but I think it's a great song.
At the end of the day if Bloc kept reproducing Silent Alarm I'dve been bored to death by now. It's a great album but I wish people would stop saying it's been downhill since then. Every Bloc release has it's own style and shows the band progressing and I adore that. Although Intimay is probably my least favourite of the three, it shows they're moving forward as a group and I still think it's an amazing album.

Oh and this song is a class standalone track.

I'm loving the new track but I can't help wondering...Could it be that Bloc Party are simply lulling us into a false sense of security by coming out with another dance based track? Unlike with Two More Years and Flux, One More Chance wouldn't feel out of place on the last released album.. which makes me think that actually they are working towards a different musical direction.

Also having seen the pictures on their twitter page it really doesn't look like Kele's working on a solo project. In fact I would say (and hope) they're recording new material.

love it

It likes like the background on the BP website are stills from the new video maybe?

I actually have no problem with the electronic direction, as I love Flux, YVAGS, and the Villains remix of Ares, but One More Chance is just disappointing, especially lyrically, and the fact that is actually has no verses. I wish they had used an actual electronic producer for this single. It would be interesting to see what they would have come up with.

Eliot James produced the best Weekend B-Sides (like Rhododendrons, Atonement, and Selfish Son) so maybe they just need a new producer to give them a fresh start.

Also, agreed, So Here We Are was easily the peak of Bloc Party. It may just be my favorite song...ever. It's so different and so beautiful. That's what I really miss about Bloc Party's music.

I think what a majority of Bloc Party fans are feeling is not necessarily disappointment in the bands dynamic style. For me, Silent Alarm was possibly one of the greatest modern rock albums. Period. I'll always remember Bloc Party as a rock band, and this new stuff just isn't rock. It's not terrible, musically it's catchy and, I'm not gonna lie, YVAGS is damn fun to listen to. But the fact is it's not rock, it's indie electro-pop if anything.

I think what most BP fans are feeling is the fear that the rock band Bloc Party as we know it may be gone for good. Sure they'll continue to make music, but they might as well be a different band altogether if this trend continues.

I go to King's College in London and recently there was an interview with kele in the alumni magazine. He actually talks about an organic evolution of the bands sound based on a traditional setup. I think the future of bloc party is a more dynamic danceable sound. Whether they can pull it off with effects pedals and guitars is another story.

I'm digging it. The piano is a bit weird, but I can imagine that it will kill live since it's so dance-y. =)

The Piano sounds very reminiscent of "Wind It Up" by Prodigy from their early days. I think this one will be a grower, I personally was strongly apposed to Mercury but having seen it live I finally see how good it is. I do however hope that they go back to more of The Prayer kind of sounds and not so down this path of dodgy simple electro. However as said by previous posts this may be amazing live.

I don't like this just like I didn't like Mercury when it first came out, but the difference between the two is how unique and interesting Mercury was, which led to my needing a few listens to really get an idea for the song.

This song is just really bland. It could have been done by a dozen other bands.

If this style is a one shot deal for them, so be it. But if this is the start of a trend like TMY and Flux were, I won't be happy...

What?! Idea for a story is possibly my favorite song from Blocs latest offerings. Echoes of Patrick wolf! Amazing.

^^ Get out! We dont need your blasphemy in here

Anyone who doesn't appreciate that Idea for a Story is a good song is frankly not listening.

please bring back SILENT ALARM PLEASE!!!

I know how to play 7 of your first album, songs on my drums, I LOVED THE OLD BP COME BACK! lol

I'll throw in another vote for Idea being a good song. It's a good song by itself and its dark tone contrasts very nicely with the high energy of Mercury.

One More Chance on the other hand...

OKAY SERIOUSLY STOP!!!! Bloc Party already said a billion times that they DO NOT WANT TO RECREATE SILENT ALARM because they could never grow as a band if they did. So everyone who is hoping for a helicopter#2 or a banquet#2 HAS TO STOP CUZ IT AINT HAPPENING! Bloc Party would be so boring if they kept recreating themselves! If you want to hear the same thing over and over again, then go find another band to listen to. I admire Bloc Party for being a daring band going to heights that no other band would dare to go. Give me another band that has done the same as bloc! thats right you CANT!! All their stuff sounds different which is amazing and the fact that you people want the same thing fed to you over and over again is completely crazy. If you want that go listen to Fall Out Boy or something, the true fans dont need you.

i dont want a return to silent alarm, i thought intimacy was amazing. Signs is one of the best songs ive heard in a long time.

one more chance sounds like a kylie minogue song.

i will always love bloc party, but i agree with some other people here that kele is maybe letting his dancing panda thoughts into the music abit much, he should just do some techno solo project and get it out of his system.

Okay, first of all, whoever wrote this is a bit of a prick.

Secondly, it's not that bloc fans want a second Silent Alarm. It is that the original Bloc fans were fans because of Bloc's edgy rock sound. You simply cannot call what Bloc Party is doing now rock. It isn't rock at all and that's what we miss. One More Chance is simply awful. It could've been done by anyone with garageband. Simply disappointing.

Verses - good
intro/ outtro - Why???
That God Damn Piano Riff they must have been really board (i expected a little more when i heard about da single)

Love Bloc but dat one not too good, unfortunately

I think they have gotten a little too synth heavy

I like "Idea For a Story", really don't get the dislike for it. "One more chance" is easily the least played new Bloc party track for me ever, afraid to say.

I disagree with folks on "so here we are" as well though, following on from the demos of stuff like "she's hearing voices" & "the answer", & then the single releases of "banquet" & "helicopter" for me it was the first single they did that left me slightly cold.. It reminds me of Coldplay, far more than the excellent & similarly slow "this modern love" did on album #1.

Personally, I have no problem with their experimental side, especially when the result is stuff like "flux", but I have to agree with folks who wish they had better levels of quality control...

Being prolific is brilliant, it's one of their strengths for me, but the entire way that the last album was debuted & the choice of "mercury" as lead off single (a track which is actually great on the lp, but I can't help feel DAMAGED sales on the album itself) instead of "talons" or even "signs", really damaged them for me, & releasing this track as a single isn't going to help that. It's not bad, it's not terrible, it's just really really not single material, whether it's "different" or not. It's an incredibly average song from a band with a bunch of better b-sides to their name than this track.

Recently heard the instrumental version of this track for the first time and was pleasantly surprised!

Much better than the original, and it is surprisingly strong without the lyrics, which otherwise pulls the track down to something ... average.
